Short answer: Claude can send real emails — not just drafts — through your own SMTP server, from any mailbox (Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, OVH, Infomaniak, custom), using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
The catch: Anthropic's first-party connector inside Claude.ai is limited to Gmail and Outlook, and focuses on draft creation. To actually send confidently from any provider, you need an MCP email server like MailMCP. Here is how it works.
2-minute setup
claude_desktop_config.jsonAnthropic provides Gmail and Outlook connectors inside Claude.ai. They work well within their narrow scope: read recent mail, draft a reply, summarise a thread. Three real limits become obvious within a week:
MCP solves all three. One MailMCP setup works across every MCP-compatible AI client and supports any IMAP/SMTP provider.
Once MailMCP is connected, Claude has 15 tools available. The most-used:
send_email
Real send via SMTP, with attachments, Cc, Bcc, Reply-To.
schedule_email
Send at a future date — Monday 8:45am, "in 3 days", etc.
draft_email
Save a draft in your Drafts folder for human review.
list_emails + read_email
Browse and read messages directly in conversation.
search_emails
Full IMAP search by sender, subject, date range, keywords.
move_email, mark_read, flag_email
Full folder + flag management — triage like a real client.
