OpenAI added MCP support to ChatGPT, allowing it to connect to external tools via the Model Context Protocol. This means ChatGPT can now interact with your email — if you have the right bridge. That bridge is MailMCP.

Create your MailMCP account

Go to MailMCP.io and sign up. It takes 30 seconds — just email and password. No credit card, no commitment. The free plan lets you test with one mailbox and 20 MCP calls per day.

Add your email mailbox

In the MailMCP dashboard, click "Add mailbox" and enter your IMAP/SMTP credentials. For Gmail, use an App Password. For Outlook, use your regular password with IMAP enabled. MailMCP auto-detects settings for 20+ providers and tests the connection instantly.

Enable MCP and copy your URL

Toggle the MCP switch on for your mailbox. MailMCP generates a unique server URL and OAuth credentials. Copy the MCP server URL — this is what you will paste into ChatGPT.

Add the MCP server in ChatGPT

Open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then find the MCP or Connectors section. Add a new MCP server and paste your MailMCP URL. ChatGPT will initiate an OAuth2 flow — approve the connection, and you are done. ChatGPT can now access your email tools.

Current limitations

ChatGPT MCP support is powerful but still evolving. Here is what you should know.

  • ChatGPT Plus/Team required — MCP support in ChatGPT is available on Plus, Team and Enterprise plans. Free ChatGPT does not support MCP connections yet.
  • No background processing — ChatGPT executes email actions only during your conversation. It cannot monitor your inbox 24/7 autonomously (for that, use n8n + MailMCP).
  • Confirmation recommended — For sending emails, we recommend reviewing ChatGPT drafts before confirming. The AI is excellent but not infallible on tone and details.
  • Rate limits apply — Free MailMCP plan: 20 MCP calls/day. Pro plan: 500 calls/day/mailbox. This covers most professional use cases.
