Gmail MCP vs Claude's native Gmail connector — what each one actually does

You asked Claude to "reply and send" your Gmail and got a draft instead? That is by design. Here is exactly why, and how MailMCP's Gmail MCP server unlocks real automation in 2 minutes.

Why Claude's native Gmail connector only creates drafts

It is not a bug — it is a deliberate design choice from Anthropic. Claude's native Gmail integration uses the Gmail API with the OAuth scope `gmail.compose`, which only allows reading and creating drafts. The wider `gmail.send` scope (which would let Claude send for you) was not requested. Result: every email Claude prepares lands in your Drafts folder. You still have to open Gmail and hit Send.

That is fine if you only have one or two emails to write. It is a problem if you want Claude to:

  • Send a batch of follow-ups to ten leads
  • Schedule a reply for tomorrow 9 AM
  • Reply to a thread without losing the In-Reply-To header
  • Move client emails from Inbox to a Clients label automatically
  • Run inside a n8n / Cursor automation that does not have Claude's UI

MailMCP solves all five. It uses standard IMAP/SMTP, so your AI gets the same level of access as a real desktop email client. 15 tools instead of 1.

What MailMCP unlocks for Gmail users

Morning Gmail triage

"Summarize the unread emails of the last 12 hours and send a polite decline to the meeting requests." Claude actually sends — Gmail native shows a stack of drafts you must approve one by one.

Scheduled follow-ups

"Send this proposal now, and follow up on Monday at 9 AM if no reply." MailMCP queues the follow-up and sends it automatically. Native connector cannot.

Smart label sorting

"Move all newsletters from this week to a Newsletters label." Claude creates the label if missing, then moves messages in bulk. Native connector: zero label control.

Multi-AI workflows

Same Gmail connection used by Claude during the day and by an n8n automation at night. One MailMCP setup, multiple AI tools. Native: each AI is its own silo.
