How to use ChatGPT to reply to your emails

Connect your mailbox to ChatGPT in a few minutes and let it read your messages, write replies in your tone, and send or schedule them — without leaving the conversation.

Short answer: ChatGPT cannot open your inbox by itself. To reply to your emails with ChatGPT, you connect your mailbox as a custom MCP connector using MailMCP. Once connected, you simply ask ChatGPT — in plain language — to read a message and write the reply. It drafts an answer that fits the conversation, and you can send it right away, keep it as a draft, or schedule it for later.

What you need

  • A mailbox with IMAP/SMTP access (Gmail, Outlook, Infomaniak, your company email — any provider).
  • A free MailMCP account to generate your secure connector URL.
  • A paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Business/Team or Enterprise) — custom connectors need Developer mode.

Step by step

1

Connect your mailbox to MailMCP

Create your free MailMCP account, add your mailbox and enable MCP access. Your personal connector URL (https://mailmcp.io/mcp/YOUR_ID) appears in the dashboard under Email accounts.

2

Add the connector in ChatGPT

In ChatGPT: Settings, then Connectors (or Apps & connectors, or Plugins depending on your build). If there is an Advanced / Developer mode toggle, turn it on; if your build shows Plugins with no Developer mode, just use the « + » button. Then add a custom MCP server, paste your MailMCP URL and select OAuth. Full details are in our ChatGPT setup doc.

3

Ask ChatGPT to reply

Open a new conversation. MailMCP is now available as a tool. Ask ChatGPT to read a message and draft a reply — it uses the thread context to write a relevant answer.

4

Send, save as draft or schedule

Tell ChatGPT to send the reply now, keep it as a draft for your review, or schedule it for later. You decide the level of automation for every message.

Example prompts to reply to your emails

Copy these into ChatGPT once MailMCP is connected:

« Reply to my latest unread email in a professional, friendly tone. »
« Draft three reply options for the last email from this client, from short to detailed. »
« Reply to confirm the meeting and schedule the send for tomorrow at 9am. »
« Answer all unread emails from today, save each reply as a draft for my review. »

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT really read and reply to my emails?
ChatGPT cannot access your mailbox on its own. With MailMCP, you connect your IMAP/SMTP mailbox as a custom MCP connector: ChatGPT can then read your messages, draft replies that match the thread context, and send or schedule them — all from the conversation.
Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan?
Yes. Adding a custom MCP connector requires Developer mode, which is only available on paid ChatGPT plans (Plus, Business/Team or Enterprise). It is not available on the free ChatGPT account.
Does MailMCP read or store my emails?
No. MailMCP is a secure bridge: your email content flows directly between your mail server and ChatGPT over an encrypted connection. MailMCP never stores or reads your messages, and you can revoke access at any time.
Will the replies sound like me?
Yes, if you tell ChatGPT how. Ask it to match your tone, keep replies short, use French with European contacts or add your signature. Because it reads the full thread, the replies stay relevant and personal.
