When do you need an App Password?

If Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled on your Microsoft account, your regular password will not work for IMAP/SMTP connections. This is the case for most Microsoft 365 business accounts and an increasing number of personal Outlook.com accounts. You need to generate an App Password that bypasses MFA for MailMCP specifically.

How to generate a Microsoft App Password

Go to account.microsoft.com, sign in, navigate to Security > Advanced security options > App passwords. Click "Create a new app password". Microsoft will generate a random password — copy it immediately as you will not be able to see it again. Paste this app password into MailMCP instead of your regular Microsoft password. The app password only works for IMAP/SMTP and does not give access to your Microsoft account.

Organization-managed accounts

If your Microsoft 365 account is managed by your organization (company or school), the admin may have disabled App Passwords or IMAP access. In that case, contact your IT administrator and ask them to enable IMAP access and allow App Password generation for your account. Some organizations use Conditional Access policies that block third-party IMAP connections — your admin can create an exception for MailMCP.
